Seksten år gamle Carrie White har det ikke så greit. Hun er ensom og blir mobbet på skolen, og hjemme må hun holde ut morens religiøse fanatisme. Men Carrie har en evne utenom det vanlige, og den har hun holdt hemmelig siden hun var liten jente. Hun kan nemlig flytte på ting ved tankens kraft. Denne evnen er både en velsignelse og en forbannelse. Da hun blir møtt med vennlighet, begynner Carrie å se lysere på livet. Skal hun omsider få muligheten til å føle seg normal, som alle andre? Hun håper mobbingen og ensomheten er et tilbakelagt kapittel.
