Pre-Prophetic Cinema: Collected Essays on Modern, Prophetic, and Avant-Garde Jewish Art

Pre-Prophetic Cinema (קולנוע קדם נבואי) is a cultural and philosophical movement that seeks to renew Jewish and Israeli art by drawing on the prophetic roots of Hebrew culture. This volume collects four foundational essays that together set out its vision, its theory, and its practice. The first sounds a call for a cultural revolution and a new, avant-garde Jewish art. The second develops a systematic doctrine of "pre-prophetic" creation and offers a practical lexicon that translates the thought of Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook into concrete cinematic technique — an architecture of the frame after Sefer Yetzirah, an editing theory modeled on the Kabbalistic Sefirot, and narrative structures drawn from PaRDeS, Midrash, and the Talmud. The third descends into the inner life of the creating soul, reading Rav Kook's phenomenology of creation, revelation, and redemption. The fourth traces the idea of Hebrew prophecy from its ancient culture, through the long silence of exile, to its possible revival in the modern era, in which the intensification of imagination in art and cinema is read as a "pre-prophetic" awakening. Engaging Kabbalah, the philosophy of Rav Kook, and the avant-garde film tradition, the collection proposes a modern Hebrew prophetic idiom for the art of film.
