Proceedings of the Third International Conference on the Archaeology of the Fourth Nile Cataract, edited by Hans-Peter Wotzka, primarily contains contributions from lectures given at the conference organised by the University of Cologne in July 2006. Numerous scientists from various disciplines and international institutions conducted research at the 4th Nile Cataract in Sudan until 2007, before the region sank into the floods of a new reservoir. Archaeologists from the Africa Research Centre of the Cologne Institute of Prehistory and Early History were also there: on Boni Island on the Nile. Their initial dating and results, including on the technology and typology of the stone artefacts found, the functional properties of ceramic vessels, local rock art, plant and animal bone remains and stress markers on human bones, are presented in this book and discussed in the context of the findings of numerous other research groups. The total of 26 contributions provide an overview of the completion of the fieldwork as part of the international rescue measures in the interplay between cultural and geosciences.
