The Cloud Upon the Sanctuary
- First published:
- 19th century
- Language: English
The Cloud Upon the Sanctuary is a book by Karl von Eckartshausen, first published in 1802. Written during a time of great spiritual and political upheaval, this esoteric work offers a deeply symbolic and mystical vision of the hidden spiritual church—a divine fellowship that exists beyond institutional religion and is guided by inner illumination. Blending Christian mysticism with elements of Hermetic and Rosicrucian thought, Eckartshausen presents the idea that true spiritual knowledge is revealed only to the pure of heart and those prepared to undergo inner transformation. The book speaks directly to seekers of wisdom, encouraging personal spiritual development as the key to accessing divine truth. It had a notable influence on later esoteric thinkers and occult movements, particularly within the Hermetic and Theosophical traditions, where it was embraced as a guiding text on the path to inner enlightenment. This translation by Isabel de Steiger was originally published in 1909.
